Gladys Eileen Scharf (nee Seymour)

Peacefully, on April 28, 2018, with family by her side, Gladys Scharf passed away at Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie at the age of 92 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons Greg Scharf (Mavis) of Portage la Prairie, and Reg Scharf (Cindy Becker) of Killarney; grandchildren Jamie Scharf (Onnolee), Lisa Baldwin (Sean), Morgan Zaretski (Joey) and Mackenzie Scharf (Mark Derksen); great-grandchildren Elie, Luca and Naomi Scharf, Hailey and Kaitlyn Baldwin, and Zachary Zaretski; and many nieces and nephews.

Gladys was predeceased by her husband Ralph Scharf, her parents Lawrence and Ellen Seymour, her siblings and their spouses Eldon Seymour (Lily), Roy Seymour (Beatrice), Ivan Seymour, Myrtle Pedersen (Harry), her sisters-in-law and their spouses Ina Harman (Cyril), May Belle Scharf, Edith Boyd (Harry), and Hazel Thornhill (Ed); her brothers-in-law Norris Scharf (Elsie and Alice), Stanley Scharf, and Hillburn Scharf.

Gladys was born September 10, 1925 in Manitou, Manitoba, where she grew up and attended school.  She married Ralph Scharf on November 11, 1943 in Manitou, Manitoba.  They lived near London, Ontario, where Ralph was stationed at RCAF Station Aylmer, serving for 2½ years during World War II, after which they returned to Winnipeg for a brief time until they moved to La Riviere to farm.  During their stay in Winnipeg Gladys worked at Eaton’s on the 8th floor, making out price tickets.  While living in La Riviere, she worked as a waitress at the restaurants at La Riviere Hotel (known as Barclay House) and later at the Holiday Mountain Resort.

Ralph and Gladys lived in La Riviere until 2001, when they moved to Killarney where they resided until the time of Ralph’s death.  In 2015 Gladys moved to the Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie.

Gladys was dedicated to her family and her work and she greatly loved sports.  She followed her children and grandchildren anywhere they went to share in their life experiences.  She enjoyed gardening, Bingo, curling, music and dancing, golfing, socializing with her friends and caring for her many cats.

Cremation and interment has taken place at the Riverside Cemetery in La Riviere on Saturday, May 12, 2018 with Rev. Brenda Gibson officiating.  Gladys’ granddaughter-in-law Onnolee Scharf played “Spanish Love Song” on the flute, accompanied by Gladys’ greatgrandson Luca Scharf on the ukulele.  Urnbearers were Gladys’ four grandchildren.  Following the graveside service, a celebration of Gladys’ life was held at the Blair Morrison Hall in La Riviere.  Words of remembrance were presented by grandson Jamie Scharf.  Gloria Johnston presided at the piano for the service.  Richard Dymond was the soloist, singing “Peace in the Valley”.  Special music was provided by grandson Jamie Scharf and his wife Onnolee and their children Elie, Luca and Naomi Scharf, singing “Goodnight and Good Morning”.  Ushers were nephews Bob Boyd and Larry Seymour.  The service was followed by a gathering of family and friends for a time of sharing at the Blair Morrison Hall with lunch served by the La Riviere United Church Women.

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Douglas Campbell Lodge, 150 9th St. SE, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3T6; or to a charity of one’s choice.
