Andy was born in 1950, third of 8 siblings, to Elgin and Helen Melvin, and grew up on the family farm south of Mather.  Farm life included riding a horse to and from Mount Prospect school (or walking depending on who's turn it was to walk), doing animal husbandry chores on the farm (or in the kitchen depending on who's turn it was to help mother), and generally participating in rural community life.  Andy was an avid participant in 4-H showing his calf in the beef club as a youth, and sponsoring a best in show trophy for the home ec group as a parent and community leader.  Andy was always very smart, but enjoyed getting a laugh in school more than focusing on the grades.  Fortunately, that did not hold him back in his education as he achieved journeyman status as an electrician; his sharp mind recalling all the code rules and best practices in a pre-internet era.

Andy married Cherie Parsonage of Baldur in 1972.  They lived for a short time in Winnipeg where their first daughter was born, and soon moved to Mather to be closer to family.  Andy worked as a construction electrician with Manitoba Hydro posted in locations near and far, building some of the key infrastructure Manitobans depend on to this day.  Andy prefered to be part of the day to day of raising their family so pivoted to grain farming and soon their family swelled to 4 children: Robbie, Cam, Rhonda, and Richard.

After 10 years of grain farming (that momento jar of #1 wheat is around here somewhere), and moonlighting as an electrician,  Andy and Cherie opened Melvin General Supply in Mather.  Andy provided multiple services in the area including electrical, plumbing, and heavy equipment operations. For a time this operation included a retail store with farming and hardware supplies available.  Later a key lock gas bar was added to services provided to the community.  In 2001, Andy and Cherie took on the operation of Mather General Store, providing groceries and a local coffee hang out.  Andy volunteered over the years behind the scenes at the hall and the rink keeping the water flowing, the temperature just right, and whatever other little maintenance was needed.

In recent years, Andy continued to work with his son Richard providing electrical services, redently celebrating 50 years serving the community. His children and grandchildren remained a priority throughout his life.  He enjoyed getting out and mowing the family properties around town, visiting with the coffee crew, and a nice drop in from a good friend.  Andy will be fondly remembered for his willingness to help anyone: family, friend, or neighbour and his example of community spiritedness.
