With sadness we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Barrie at his home in Boissevain, Manitoba. A wonderful father to Jackie (Steve) and Tanis (Greg), he was also a caring and attentive Papa to Stefanie (Dillon) & Jordan Smith, Megan (Justin), Anna, Shayla, Jay, Katie & Maxx Carter, and a recent Great-Papa to Asher, Kole, Hudson, Hunter & Hazel, who will all miss him dearly. He is also mourned by his lovely companion, Sue.

Barrie was predeceased by his beloved wife Donna (nee Houston) in 2011, who he first met in Boissevain in 1959 when he was a young banker in nearby Killarney. The two reconnected five years later when Donna needed a cheque cashed in Winnipeg – and the rest is history. They were married in 1966.

Born in Souris, MB, Barrie grew up and attended school in Franklin and Newdale, MB and Carnduff, SK. After high school, his dad sent him off on his motorcycle to Killarney, where he was hired at CIBC, the bank where he spent his 35-year career in many branches and roles.

Known as “Scrooge” Marley to some of his witty friends, his generosity belied the nickname. He helped many young people get a job in the bank and was always ready to help out when needed.  He also enjoyed a party and a good laugh. Barrie and Donna enjoyed many great summers at their cabin on Lake Winnipeg, as well as winter vacations in Arizona and Palm Springs.

Barrie was a great planner who possessed an extraordinarily organized, methodical and clear-sighted mind. His home and office were always meticulous, with pens carefully aligned and shoes arranged. He used his abilities to make everything better – whether a bank branch, a client’s financial future, home renovations, or his family’s prospects. He kept himself trim, fit and well-groomed at all times. He even tried to help out the Town of Boissevain when he moved there in 2017, attending many town council meetings with that goal in mind. Alas, they did not often take his good advice to heart!

After retiring in 1993, Barrie could not sit still for long. He got his real-estate license and sold a few houses, ran Unicity Taxi for a year, then finally he & Donna decided to “relax” in Kelowna, BC in 1994. But not for long! He ended up managing Scandia Golf & Games, then worked for BDO Dunwoody and then MNP in their bankruptcy and insolvency departments until 2011.

Life changed drastically when Donna passed away in 2011. A few years later, he decided to move to Boissevain with his lovely friend & companion Sue Quinn (who he’d reacquainted with in 2012) and his much-loved dog Emma, moving into a house next door to his daughter Jackie. He had many friends in town, both old and new, and will be greatly missed.
