Christena Gibson (nee Moffat)
October 19, 1933 - January 12, 2026

Christena passed away peacefully (at Baldur Transitional Unit) on January 12, 2026 at the age of 92.

Left to honour her memory are her children, Shayne (Melanie) Gibson, Sherry (Boyd) Mullin and Derryle (Chris) Gibson, daughter-in-law Pat Gibson (Art Mickelson), her 8 grandchildren, Tony, Blair & Jason Gibson, Ryan & Kristin Gibson and Kailey Taylor, Candis Moore and Shannon Mullin as well as 15 great grandchildren (10 girls and 5 boys).

Christena was predeceased by her husband, Calvin in 2011, son, Brent in 1987, her parents, Russell and Tena Moffat, brother, Brian Moffat, sisters Georgena and Louise (Frank Young) and brother, Andrew as well as brother and sisters-in-law David (Dorothy) Gibson, Bob Currie and Ken (Myrtle) Sabad. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Gwen Moffat, Gayle Currie, Faye (Danny) Stacey, and brother-in-law Jim (Heather) Sabad.

Christena grew up on the family farm in the Rose Valley district south of Holmfield and took her schooling at Rose Valley and Holmfield schools. She married Calvin Gibson in 1954 and they began farming near Holmfield. Throughout the years their farm operation included grain farming as well as raising chickens, pigs and cattle. They also began raising Purebred Charolais cattle. Mom was an integral part of the farming operation, doing chores, driving the grain truck, cataloguing the purebred cattle and taking meals to the field, as well as driving their “private” school bus (station wagon) in earlier years and raising their family. She was a hard worker, a wonderful cook and gifted at playing the piano. She loved her pets, both cats and dogs.

In later years, Mom worked as a cook at Killarney Golf Course and then at Cartwright Golf Course and at the corner Pocket for Donna and Eddie Lamb whom she especially liked working with. After moving to Cartwright, Mom and Dad ran the day-to-day operations at the ShurGro Anhydrous Plant near Mather for a few years. Mom later wrote in a memoir of how she enjoyed that job.

Mom was not a traveller, but since Dad wanted to travel, they had some wonderful trips including Australia & New Zealand, the Maritimes, Florida, Hawaii and the Dominican Republic (or the Dominion Republic, as Dad would say!) They also spent part of their winters as Snowbirds in Mesa, Arizona and Osoyoos, British Columbia enjoying the warmer weather and golfing.

Several years after Dad passed away Mom formed a special bond with her neighbours, Akshay and Riya and their two dogs. When they moved across town she continued to visit them weekly, often taking fresh baked cookies or cake and, of course, treats for “her” dogs.

The family would like to thank Marlene and all the Homecare staff, Dr. Bemment and the nurses and staff at Killarney hospital as well as Dr. Desmond and the nurses and staff at Baldur Transitional Unit during her short time there.
