Dixie Marie Ashton

June 29, 1950 - March 22, 2023

Dixie Marie Bridges was born on June 29, 1950 in Crystal City, Manitoba, the second daughter of Ken and Emma (Wray) Bridges. After a brief battle with cancer, Dixie passed away on March 22, 2023.

Dixie spent most of her childhood and school years in Cartwright, Manitoba. In 1968, she married Tom Vanrobaeys and their first son, Jeffrey, was born in Winnipeg. Tom took a job with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) and they moved to Kenora, Ontario. They soon moved to Rainy River and during this time their second son, Jason, was born in Fort Frances, Ontario. Tom continued to be transferred with the CIBC and the family spent time in Virden, Gillam, and Winnipeg. After Tom’s death in 1977, Dixie remained in Winnipeg with her two sons.  She married Raymond Ashton in 1980. The family moved to St. Eustache in 1984. Ray and Dixie later relocated to Headingley before finally returning to Cartwright,.

Dixie was a talented artist and created many works of art throughout her life. Drawing was her favorite art form and many of her works are cherished throughout her families’ homes and businesses. One of Dixie’s wishes was to be buried in a “Wolf” themed urn. Her family selected one of Dixie’s art pieces of a wolf and it will be etched into her urn.

Dixie was small in stature but large in personality.  She had a great sense of humour and was very gregarious and outgoing. She enjoyed interacting with people and often worked in jobs that embodied her personality. Whether it was during her time as a bank teller, a book keeper, an educational assistant in multiple schools, or recently while employed by Canada Post, everybody knew and loved Dixie.

Dixie loved to garden and spent many hours working in the yard and caring for her plants.  People often commented on the beauty of the yard and its wide variety of shrubs and flowers.  Dixie enjoyed entertaining guests and socializing. Her home was often the center of visits and gatherings with friends and family. This recently included many Saturday evenings with friends to play bingo and cards where countless laughs were shared.

Dixie was predeceased by her parents Ken and Emma, husband Tom Vanrobaeys, and her sister Lana. She is survived by her husband Ray Ashton, her sons Jeff (Dianne) Vanrobaeys and Jason (Nicole) Vanrobaeys, her grandchildren Emma and Owen Vanrobaeys, and siblings Connor Bridges, Kirby (Terry) McCullough, Darren Bridges, and their families.

Donations in Dixie’s memory can be made to the Cartwright Community Independent School: Box 439 Cartwright, MB, R0K 0L0, or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St. Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7
