Dad began his career in hotel ownership with the purchase of a small building from
Pepere in San Clara. It had a restaurant, rooms for rent and a vendor. In time, additions
were built to accommodate a beverage room and living quarters to the building. As he
was not only a small businessman, but he was also quite handy and decided to build
another hotel in Dunrea. With a lot of hard work, he and mom had a thriving local
business that catered to hunters in fall, large family Christmases, a tasty kitchen and
friendly beverage room.
In addition to his strong devotion to the church, Dad was quite involved in the Dunrea
community through the years as a member of the St. Felix Knights of Columbus, RM
councillor, member of school board, member of the local hospital board & rink
committee. He was especially proud of his Lifetime Membership to the Manitoba Hotel
Association. In retirement, dad built a home and “extra buildings” to house his antique
collection. This hobby turned into the creation of the Dunrea Flea Market. He worked at
this with Carole with great dedication and enthusiasm for 25 years. Many friends and
acquaintances from coast to coast were made during this venture. But wait! No, he still
wasn’t done. He needed more collectibles, antiques, and auctions in his life LOL. This
led to building a museum next door to the house. His passion to this hobby was
unmatched by many. He left his mark on the town of Dunrea by using funds from those
numerous Flea Markets to get a 15’ high snow goose sculpted and mounted by the
entry into town. What a wonderful legacy.
Love you, DAD
