Shirley Doreen Smith, born November 19, 1935, in Holmfield, Manitoba, passed away
peacefully on December 29, 2025.
Doreen was the beloved daughter of Elva and Arthur Hobson. She shared a very close,
lifelong bond with her brother Walter. When Walter married Edith, Doreen gained a
cherished sister for life.
Since her father was in the military, Doreen moved often growing up, living in Ottawa,
Cultus Lake, Winnipeg, Shilo, Douglas, Carberry, and finally settling in Boissevain.
After leaving school, Doreen worked as a civilian clerk in the Department of National
Defense in Shilo. It was during this time that she met Frank Smith at Young Peoples in
Boissevain.
Doreen married Frank on October 6 th , 1962, and moved to the family farm, where together
they raised three boys: Art, Doug, and Steve. Many treasured memories were made on the
farm working together as a family and during vacations, either traveling with the tent trailer
or at the cabin on Lake Max.
Family times at the cabin were filled with waterskiing, swimming, campfires, card games,
and quality time as a family. Doreen loved music, photographing nature, traveling, and old-
time dancing with her husband Frank. She also loved games; Doreen played right up until
her final days, playing against her sons during her last Christmas and winning with no
remorse! Doreen was also very generous with her time and organizational skills by
volunteering at various organizations around Boissevain, including the Beckoning Hills
Museum for 22 years, the Turtle Mountain Snappers Camera Club, Boissevain AMR, the
thrift shop, and the Boissevain and Morton Growing Project.
Family was incredibly important to Doreen. She was proud of her boys and their families
and was an actively involved Grandma to Jordan and Stefanie, who lived in the same town.
She never missed a grandchild’s game or activity if she could help it.
Doreen will be lovingly remembered by her sons Art (Laurie), Doug (Val), and Steve
(Jackie); grandchildren Stef and Jordan; step-grandchildren Stephanie, Alyssa (Will), and
Luna; Cassie and Brennan (Liv); great-grandchildren Asher and Kole; and step great-
grandchildren Astrea and Billy. She will also be remembered fondly by Edith, Donalda,
Eileen, and Lorraine.
Her love, laughter, and devotion to family will forever remain in the hearts of those who
knew her.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Nell and the staff at Boissevain
Hospital for the compassionate care provided.
