Dulcie passed away peacefully at the Manitou Health Center, at the age of 90 years, with her family by her side.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: Ken, Arlene (Colin) Kirkpatrick, Darren (Wendy), Debbie (Gord) Stewart as well as 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband John, their youngest daughter Patti and grandson Dean. She was also predeceased by her parents Herb and Dorothy Kingston, in-laws JT and Emma Maloney, siblings Ernie (Kitty), Robert (Anne) and Arthur Kingston. She is survived by sister-in-law Bette (Ray) Tait and sister-in-law Helen Maloney. Dulcie was born in Manitou and raised on the family farm north of town with her parents, Herb & Dorothy and 3 brothers, Ernie, Robert and Art. She attended school in Manitou and after graduation took a short course to obtain a teaching certificate. She taught in the Mowbray district for a year.
She married John Maloney in 1953 and they settled down on the family farm south of Kaleida. Working together to make the farm profitable, while raising 5 children was not easy, but she worked tirelessly and never complained. Dulcie was an excellent seamstress, sewing dresses, cowboy shirts and costumes and later matching pajamas for the grandchildren. She was known for her tasty pies and fresh homemade buns. The welcome mat was always out for anyone who stopped in to visit and there was always a hearty meal served. She had a large garden every year and could preserve any type of fruit or vegetable by canning or making jams, jellies, pickles or relish, which were enjoyed by family and friends.
She was quiet in her accomplishments, but was very proud to be named “Queen of the Manitou Fair” one year, after entering a variety of items from needle work to floral displays, baking and preserves. Dulcie was an active community member, being a leader for the local 4-H sewing club and passing on her sewing skills in the early years and later becoming a leader for the local 4-H Horse Club. She & John were strong supporters of the local Anglican Church and Dulcie was a member of the St. Mary’s/St. Alban’s ACW for many, many years. She was also a volunteer member of the Kaleida Curling Club. She was a news correspondent for the Western Canadian keeping the Kaleida Community news in the local paper. She also volunteered many hours helping other community members produce the Kaleida District History book.
After Dulcie & John retired from the farm and moved to Manitou in 1995, they continued to volunteer in the community by delivering “Meals on Wheels”, Dulcie called Bingo and visited at the Manitou Health Centre, and she was on the board of the Friendship Center as well as helped to organize the floor curling schedules. Besides volunteering, they had more leisure time to enjoy as well. They loved to dance and attended many dances both local and in nearby towns. They enjoyed meeting new people and made many friends. As well, they joined the local square dance club. They enjoyed floor curling and playing whist at the local Friendship Center. Dulcie was also an active member of the Red Hat Dollies for a number of years enjoying many outings with the group.
Over the years, Dulcie & John travelled to various parts of B.C. and Saskatchewan several times visiting relatives and site seeing. They enjoyed bus tours to Branson, Missouri and to the East Coast. The majority of their travels were local, attending parades and festivals and of course, the fishing trips around Manitoba.
Of all the accomplishments and enjoyment throughout her life, Dulcie would tell you that her family was the highlight. She was a “stay at home Mom” in today’s terminology and her children were grateful for that. She was kept busy attending curling games, ball games, 4-H competitions, bowling at Carman with Patti and later graduations, weddings and grandchildren’s activities. She was very proud of the accomplishments of each family member. She loved large family gatherings with lots of laughter and the many boisterous card games. John & Dulcie were married just a few days short of 67 years and many will remember attending some great parties celebrating their 25th, 40th, 50th, and 60th Wedding Anniversaries. Their love was a relationship that many would envy, enduring the tough times as well as the good times. She enjoyed a life well lived!
