George J. Neufeld passed away peacefully on July 1, 2023, at the age of 99 years, 6 months and
12 days old, at the Evergreen Place Personal Care Home, Boissevain, Manitoba.
George was born to Johann and Agatha Neufeld on December 19, 1923, in Lindenau, Soviet
Union, now Ukraine. When George was six months the family moved to Canada, eventually
settling in the Whitewater area.
On September 26, 1946, George married his beloved Katie Engbrecht, settling down to farm in
1948 and raising a family of six children, Rick, Frieda, John, Phil, Ingrid and Herb. George and
Katie were devoted members of the Whitewater Mennonite Church and they lived a long and
happy life raising their children and in later years travelling and spending time with their
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George lost his life-long companion Katie to cancer in
2012.
While farming, George also drove a school bus for over twenty years, beginning in the late
1960s. After retiring from farming, George and Katie moved into town, where George worked
for the Boissevain Co-op delivering fuel oil to farms in the area. Throughout his life George
enjoyed sports, whether it was golfing, curling, hockey or softball, following his Cleveland ball
team or spending hours watching his grandchildren and their games.
In later years, George enjoyed visiting with family and friends and could be seen around town
on his scooter or taking trips to Ninga to get a slice of his favourite pie, banana-cream. Always
humble, he was always interested in what others were doing and after some prodding would
love to tell stories of their life on the farm.
George was predeceased by his wife Katie in 2012, his granddaughter, Ashley Neufeld in 2009
and his sisters-in-law, Anne Neufeld, Marlene Neufeld and Leanna Neufeld. He is survived by his
six children Rick, Frieda (Ron), John (Laurie), Phil (Bev), Ingrid (Shawn) and Herb (Wanda) as well
as nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He also leaves
to mourn his passing his three siblings, Tina (Fred), Helmut (Lois) and John as well as many
nieces and nephews.
George touched the lives of many in his nearly 100 years of a full life and will be greatly missed.
The family wants to thank the staff of Westview Lodge and Evergreen Place Personal Care
Home for the loving care they provided George in his later years as well as the many friends and
family who visited with him, always bringing a smile to his face.
