It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Gladys on April 15, 2025, at Bayside Personal Care Home in Killarney, MB at the age of 104 - just 17 days shy of her 105th birthday.
Gladys and her identical twin sister, Irene, were born May 2,1920 to Bernard and Ida Turner of the Oak Ridge District outside of Killarney. Gladys grew up on the farm and went to Oak Ridge School.
Gladys met Benjamin Freeman at a barn dance in Oak Ridge in 1937. He asked her to dance, and the rest is history. In 1941, they were married in a double wedding ceremony with their identical twin siblings, Russ and Irene, at the Holy Trinity Church in Killarney. It made the Winnipeg Free Press with pictures of the couples. The couples moved in together on the Freeman family farm in Tisdale District to raise their families. She and Irene were famously not recognized as ‘who was who’ when they went to town. There was inevitably a lot of giggling involved! In 1951, Russ and Irene moved to a farm in the Oak Ridge District.
Gladys & Ben were parents to Brian (1942), Roy (1944), and Jim (1949). Immensely proud of her boys her whole life, she was a lucky lady to see them grow, create families, live good lives, and retire. She spoiled them all along the way. What a gift to have one’s mom for so long.
Gladys enjoyed time spent with family, baking, gardening, sewing, quilting, and knitting. She had epic vegetable gardens. She loved her pink petunias and roses. Gladys was acclaimed for her beautiful quilts, knit toques, mitts, slippers, and socks, as well as her famous teddy bears made for charity that were sent all over the world. Pot holders, aprons, and table runners adorn her family’s homes. She always had closets full of quilts to share. Quick witted and never missing anything, Gladys was also an accomplished poet - writing captivating gems. She also was an active member of the Killarney A.C.W. for many years.
Gladys & Ben celebrated a century of Freemans on the homestead. They were married for 45 years. Gladys & Ben remained on the farm until Ben’s passing in July 1987. She lived on her own in her apartment until the age of 99 when she became ill and moved to Bayside Care Home. Being a woman of impeccable inner strength, she adjusted quickly to her new way of life. As Mom & Grandma, she delighted in children and lived to have 9 grandkids, 25 great grandchildren, and 12 great, great grandchildren.
Gladys left an imprint on this life. A signature of family, compassion, kindness, and consideration; doing things for others. She was an avid reader and a remarkable listener. Unparallelled advice was given by her as she had all the experience. She had a gentle voice and quiet knowing; a smile and a giggle to light any occasion.
Gladys is survived by her son Brian (Linda), daughter in-law Linda (Roy), and son Jim (Lorraine); grandchildren Gary, Gail (Brent) Campbell, Tamara (Scott) Bell, Kevin (Fernanda), Susan (Jason) McInnis, Margie (Gary) Hill, Ron (Crystal), and Tom (Lori); as well as many great and great, great grandchildren and extended family.
Gladys was predeceased by her beloved husband Ben, her son Roy, her grandson Dennis, her parents Bernard and Ida, as well as her siblings Tom, Irene, Charlie, and Laverne.
A service honouring a life well lived will be held on April 23, 2025, at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church at 2:00 p.m. with the interment to follow.
