After living a long and caring life for more than 103 years, Hazel died at Pembina Manitou Health Centre on November 29, 2024 surrounded by family. Hazel was born September 15th, 1921 in her parents’ home in the valley at Mowbray, MB. She is survived by her four children, sons, Dennis (Janice), Winnipeg, MB; Neil, Miami, MB.; daughters, Donna (Russ) Simpson, Peace River, AB; Nancy Moloney, Saskatoon, SK; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Cliff; her parents, Bill and Eva Jackson; her brother and sister-in-law Gerry and June Jackson; sister and brother-in-law Joan and Doug Buchanan; sister Beryl (infant) and sons-in-law, Larry Rekken and Garnet Moloney.
Hazel attended Mowbray ‘Valley’ School, until her early teens when she left home to work as a hired girl. In the winter of 1937/1938, she attended Manitou Youth Training Center to study Home Economics and Citizenship. During WWII, she worked in Toronto in a munitions factory; then returned to work in Winnipeg. She had met Cliff before the war, and they were married May 15, 1943. They lived in Winnipeg, returning to the McKenzie district briefly, then purchased the farm south of La Riviere, where they raised their family. After retiring from farming in 1975, they lived in La Riviere, eventually moving to Morden, MB in 1999. Hazel had been a resident at Pembina Manitou Health Centre, since November 30, 2021.
Hazel’s greatest joy was her family, all of whom looked up to her and loved her dearly. Her interests included gardening, cooking, knitting, sewing, cross-stitch, crocheting, puzzles, and flower arranging. She never tired of watching birds at the feeders outside her window, especially at the Care Home. She practiced “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”, long before it was the trend. She volunteered her gifts of time and talent with St. Andrew’s United Church through U.C.W. and Sunday School; La Riviere 4-H Club; and events in the communities where she lived.
Her positive and cheerful attitude enhanced life for family, friends, neighbors and community. She will be missed.
Special thanks to the Pembina Manitou Health Centre Staff for their care and comfort provided to Mom. As well, we thank all her friends for cards, phone calls and visits which brightened her days.
