Jacob Peters made his entrance into the world on February 17, 1930. Those there to greet him included his mother, Margaret, his father, Jacob, and his older sister. He was born North East of Killarney, in the municipality of Turtle Mountain. When he was three or four years old, his family moved south of Killarney, where they purchased their own land and began farming. Shortly after Jake was born, six other children followed, two boys and four girls. The Peters family had a difficult time getting their farm established. In order to survive, the family learned to make do with very little. From an early age Jake was involved with the farming operation, which included breaking up the land, sowing and harvesting, and caring for livestock.
As a young child, Jake knew that his family was poor; however, he learned from his parents to be grateful for the things he had. Although their house was drafty, and the blankets froze to the walls in winter, the family of ten loved and appreciated one another, and thanked God for the blessings around them.
As Jake grew older, his life changed quickly, and childhood ended abruptly. Upon completing grade eight, Jake’s education came to a halt. His work was needed at the farm. Due to his father’s poor health and the family’s financial situation, Jake took over the farm work when he was fourteen. As he moved towards early adulthood, he wanted to attend Bible School. He kept this desire to himself, knowing that the money was not available to make his dream a reality. However; he studied God’s word on his own, and committed many stories and verses to heart. The time spent reading his Bible built in him a deep love for God and a faith rooted in the promises he found in God’s Word. Jake was baptized at the age of 19 and became a member of the Lena Mennonite Church.
On July 17, 1955, Jake married Margaret Enns. In December of that same year, Jake and Margaret purchased land, and moved to their first home near Bannerman. They were blessed with four children: Edith (December 1956), Irma (March, 1959), Art (September 1960), and Hertha (March 1962). Jake and Margaret worked hard to build up their farm. Jake and his son Art farmed together for many years. And today that same land that was broken and tilled by Jake, is farmed by Art and his daughter and son-in-law. As a farmer who began his career in the late 1930’s, Jake saw rapid advances made in farming technology. In his early years of farming, he walked behind a horse. The final year he planted a crop, he seeded with an air seeder in a tractor with air-conditioning.
In 1981, Jake and Margaret moved to Killarney. Jake continued to be heavily involved in the farm, and even days before his passing, he still knew what was happening at the farm: how much rain had fallen, which field was being seeded, which crops had been planted in which field.
The 1980s brought Jake into one of the best seasons of his life: he became a Grandpa. Jake’s love for his grandchildren was unparalleled. Jake and Margaret’s house at 206 Wells Street was a place of many memories, especially for the grandchildren. Meals, bike rides, games, and of course ice cream were regular occurrences at their residence. Their door was always open and their house was filled with food, laughter, conversation, and an abundance of love. Over the years, Jake and Margaret were faithfully involved in Lena Mennonite Church and later, Lakeview Community Church. Their love for people was evident in their interactions and the way they lived their lives.
In 2007, Jake and Margaret sold their house and moved into an apartment on Park Street. Their open door policy remained, and their new home was a place where people were always welcome. Great grandchildren arrived in those years, and more games were played, countless block towers were built, and there too, the ice cream never ran out.
On June 14 of 2020, Margaret passed away. Jake’s grief was unspeakably deep, but so was his faith in God and his trust in God’s faithfulness. In his grief, Jake leaned deeply into the loving arms of his Saviour, and continued to encourage and inspire those around him.
In the summer of 2023, Jake moved into Lakeview Villa. As he began to experience new physical limitations, he continued to trust in the unfailing love of his Heavenly Father.
Throughout his life, Jake was known as a man of honesty, integrity, and someone who believed the best about those around him. He made time for people, and his gentle spirit, warm love, profound wisdom, and commitment to Christ impacted the lives of countless people. Jacob Peters was a man whose life was lived in humility – not for his own glory, but always and only for the glory of God.
On June 28, 2025, Jake passed away peacefully at the Tri-Lake Health Centre in Killarney.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Margaret, 1 sister and 2 brothers, 3 sisters-in-law and 3 brothers-in-law.
He is survived by his four children: Edith, Irma (John), Art (Minola), Hertha (Dan); 9 Grandchildren and their spouses, and 12 great-grandchildren and counting; 4 sisters, 1 sister-in-la and 3 brothers-in-law.
