It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Grandmother and “GG” on
April 15, 2025, at Bayside Personal Care Home in Killarney, with family by her side.
Joan was born on May 13, 1935 in Hamiota to William and Emily Miller. She was raised in
Hamiota with her sister Carol, graduating from High School in 1953. She then moved to
Winnipeg where she received her teaching certificate at The Provincial Normal School. Joan
started her teaching career in Margaret, and it was there where she met her future husband,
Bob Wright. Bob and Joan were married November 4, 1955 and enjoyed 52 years of marriage.
They embarked on a life of farming both north and south of Boissevain and retired to town in
1983. Joan brought her skills to the farm and made it a home. She loved to garden, bake, cook
and spent many hours assisting with milking, driving the tractor, chasing cattle or whatever
Bob needed help with.
Joan was an avid gardener from the large lush vegetable garden on the farm, to the scaled
down version in town. Her green thumb extended to her beautiful flowers and rose bushes
which brought her so much joy.
Joan had an active role in the success of Wright’s Auction Service. She is most remembered for
being the friendly face at the cashier’s desk, but also had many other responsibilities behind
the scenes. Bob could not have done it without her. Joan’s expertise has been a resource for
the auction service for many years even after retirement and her influence on the business
lives on.
Joan was an active volunteer in the community and participated on many committees. She
spent countless hours at Ninga rink working the kitchen at various events, volunteering for
UCT and the Boissevain Hospital Auxiliary Board, judging 4-H speeches, and providing baking
and food whenever asked. She was an active member of the St. Paul’s United Church which
included teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, UCW and serving on various church
committees.
From a young age, Joan had a passion for sports. She figure skated, played baseball and
developed her passion for curling in high school which continued throughout her adult life. In
her retirement years she also enjoyed golfing and bowling with friends.
Joan and Bob liked to travel and were fortunate enough to have had many wonderful trips
throughout Canada and the US with friends and family.
Joan enjoyed being around people whether it was washing dishes at the church or enjoying
cards with friends. One of Joan’s greatest qualities was her sense of humor and ability to laugh
at herself. Those who knew her well enjoyed her quick wit and her spunky personality.
Joan was a strong and independent person. Her strength shone most while caring for Bob
through his Parkinson’s journey. Her ability to encourage and assist him to live every day to
the fullest, was an inspiration and an example to us all. She continued to draw on this inner
strength throughout the rest of her life. She showed us that it wasn’t always easy, but when
challenges present, you tackle them head on with as much positivity as you can muster.
The most important thing in Joan’s life was family. She made sure that her children had a
balance between work, education and social activities and taught them the tools to be
independent and successful in life. Even though Joan was busy with Wright’s Auction service,
the Killarney Auction Mart, and the full-time job of being a housewife and mother, she always
made time for family.
Her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren brought her so much
joy. She looked forward to attending their many activities, and couldn’t wait to hear their
stories at every visit. She was always up for any game the kids wanted to play, and she never
said no to a game of cribbage. Joan took great pride in teaching them how to cook their
favourite Grandma recipes. Over these last few years, it was the grandchildren who inspired
the biggest smile and the most joy.
Mom, grandma, and “GG” will be missed but never forgotten as we know, “Those we love
don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”
Joan is survived by children Rick (Laura), Warren (Theresa), Gale (Lyall), Jacquie (Tim), Web
(Brenda), sister Carol Friesen, 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-
grandchildren, as well as her extended family.
She was predeceased by her husband Bob, daughter Brenda, grandson Austin, and great-
granddaughter Kyla.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cherry Creek Place, and the Home Health Care
Service in Boissevain for the support and kindness Mom received.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the Bayside Personal
Care Home, Killarney, for their excellent care and compassion.
