John Allan Sterling

With great sadness, we announce that John Sterling peacefully passed away on October 13, 2024, at the age of 67 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

John was born on January 8, 1957, in Morden, Manitoba and was the youngest surviving son of Leo and Elizabeth (Irvine) Sterling.  John was pre-deceased by his father Leo Sterling in 1993, his mother Liz Sterling in 2008, wife Donna (Odell) Sterling in 2015, and brother Stan Sterling in 2022.

He grew up on the family farm northwest of Pilot Mound, Manitoba, attended high school in Pilot Mound and later obtained a welding certificate from Assiniboine Community College.  John married Donna in 1976 and raised their family on the Sterling farm near Pilot Mound until retiring from farming in 2016.

John’s life was further enriched by his marriage to Brenda McCannell in 2016 and the love that they shared, and the relationships he developed with stepdaughters Becky (McCannell) Simard and Brooke McCannell and their families.

He enjoyed his life with family and friends in Pilot Mound, Brandon, Rock Lake, and Mesa, Arizona.  John always had several projects underway, and a story to be shared over coffee or beer.  He will be remembered for his pride in his family and their accomplishments, his unwavering determination, and his energetic laughter that was easily recognized by those who knew him.
John had a seemingly tireless work ethic and was talented in all that he did in farming, building, renovations, restoring steam-engines, tractors and antiques, and woodworking.  He was a true jack-of-all trades as a skilled welder and mechanic, enjoyed deer hunting, always curious how things worked and were built, and could drive anything with a motor and wheels.  John took pleasure riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles whenever and wherever he could, and the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally was an event he attended often.

John leaves to mourn his wife Brenda (McCannell) Sterling, brother Larry (Kathy) Sterling, daughters Shanna Sterling, Tracey Sterling (Gene Kelly), and Jackie (Daniel) Van De Velde, and grandchildren Olivia, Alex, Anthony and Russell Van De Velde.  Also left to mourn are stepdaughters Becky (Darcy) Simard and Brooke McCannell (Darren Height), and John’s step-grandchildren, Kolby, Madden and Bryelle Simard, and Taylor McCannell Adair and Riley McCannell along with numerous nieces and nephews, countless cousins and other relatives, and many, many friends.

The family expresses their gratitude to the paramedics and staff at Brandon Regional Health Centre who attended to John for their care and compassion.

Donations in memory of John may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 1379 Kenaston Blvd, Winnipeg, MB, R3P 2T5, or to the Louise Aquatic Centre, cheques payable to the Municipality of Louise, PO Box 310, Crystal City, MB, R0K 0N0.
