Katie (Dueck) Peters

Katie of Boissevain, Manitoba, passed away at the age of 99 on July 27, 2024 at Southwood
Hospice in Calgary, Alberta. Katie was born on June 10, 1925. She was preceded in death by
her husband Nicholas (Nick) A. Peters and her oldest son Arthur N. Peters. She will be deeply
missed by Diane (Lee) Atwood, Ron (Sharon), Harold (LaVerna), Karen (Darwyn) Petras and
(Leona) wife of Arthur Peters (deceased) as well as 11 grandchildren – Kurt, Brad, Scott, (Art);
Sean, Josh, Julianna (Ron); David, Sharaya (Harold); Nicholas, Daniel, Brendan (Karen) and 14
great grandchildren.
At the age of six months Katie and her family arrived in Canada from Russia, the last of a
generation that immigrated from Russia. The family lived in several locations in Manitoba
before settling in Minto. Katie accepted the Lord as Her Saviour at the age of 6 and spent her
life in devotion to following Christ. Some of the things she enjoyed as a youth were
“Sangerfests” or songfests with choirs from different churches gathering to sing together) and
trekking to Brandon with her brother John. Sledding and skating in winter alongside the railway
tracks, playing baseball. One special memory is of the family gathering at twilight and singing
German hymns. One song was “When the Golden Sun is Setting” sung as an evening prayer and
was a meaningful way to end the day. She traveled the world, visiting Israel, Greece, Egypt,
parts of southern Africa, the British Isles and parts of South America with her husband together
with the Christian Business Mens Association and had the opportunity to share her testimony.
Katie also led various Friendship Bible studies in Manitoba as part of the Christian Women’s
Club (part of the CBM Assoc). After Katie and her husband left the farm and moved into
Boissevain she met with community women for Bible Study and prayer. She had the gift of
building relationships with women outside of the church as well as making all feel welcome in
her home and life. She was also active in her local church, Boissevain Mennonite Brethren
Church. Missionaries were always welcome in her home and she had a passion for the work of
Christian camps in Manitoba, namely Turtle Mountain Bible Camp and Gimli Bible Camp having
attended there at age 14. She always enjoyed hearing and reading stories of young people
learning to love the Lord that she loved. Mom loved her rose bushes, was an avid reader and
enjoyed learning, camping trips and the weekly Friday evening treks to Lake William in summer.
After moving to Calgary and despite dealing with macular degeneration and losing her vision
one of the ways Katie left an impact was by knitting baby caps that her doctor was able to bless
young moms and their babies with. She left an impact on the lives of all who took care of her in
her later years at Trinity Lodge, Calgary, Alberta as well as her final months in Southwood
Hospice. Never complaining and always grateful to everyone for their care, often asking if there
was something she could pray for. For her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren
Katie was a prayer warrior, always concerned for their spiritual health. She very much enjoyed
discussions that revolved around solving the problems of the church and the world and she
loved a great conversation about prophesy. Continuing to learn was something she very much
enjoyed. Even toward the end we were able to enjoy wonderful conversations with mom,
reading her favourite Psalms together and singing hymns. For us it was a blessing that her mind
was clear to the end.

Katie’s children, Diane, Ron, Harold, and Karen along with their families would like to invite
family and friends to the celebration of her life at Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel, 8241 31
Street SE, Calgary, Alberta T2C 1H9 on Tuesday, August 6 at 2 pm MST. Interment on August 9
at 1 pm at the Boissevain Cemetery, Boissevain, Manitoba with a reception to follow at 1:30 pm
at the Boissevain Mennonite Brethren Church.
