It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Leonard John Shackel, who left us peacefully on
September 24, 2024 at the age of 66. Leonard was a beloved husband, son, dad, papa, brother, uncle
and friend, whose kindness and generosity touched the lives of many.
Born to Gordon and Shirley on December 5, 1957 in Killarney, Manitoba, Leonard grew up with a passion
for hockey, baseball, high school football, curling and golf. He pursued a career in the electrical field
working in various locations. In 1989 he started with Manitoba Hydro with Electrical Construction. He
worked in various locations until he relocated to Gillam in 1990.
Leonard married Phyllis on April 13, 1995 while attending the World Curling Event in Brandon. Leonard
and Phyllis resided in Gillam until their retirement and then relocated to Killarney in 2014.
Leonard’s two favourite passions were golfing and curling. While in Gillam he was on the executive of
the curling club, coached High School Curling and was very active in the Junior Curling Program. He
curled in the Men’s League and many bonspiels. Many hours were enjoyed at the Gillam Curling Club.
He also curled with a Senior Men’s Team out of Thompson. Much to his disappointment, there was no
golfing in Gillam, but enjoyed the opportunity to golf when down south on vacation! When they moved
to Killarney, Leonard immediately became involved in curling and golfing. He was on the executive of
both the curling club and the Senior Men’s Golf. He curled in various leagues in Killarney and in the
Seniors at the Brandon Curling Club.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis, his son Christopher (Dannalee), step-daughters Allison and Jill (Glynn),
as well as his grandchildren Sheamus and Devlin, Skylar, Rielle and Colson; his mom Shirley, brothers
Russell (Wendy), Greg (Tracey) and Larry (Kim), sisters-in-Law Irene, Lois (Claire) and Glenda, aunts,
uncles, cousins and numerous nieces and nephews – all of them were his favourites! He was
predeceased by his dad Gordon, father-in-law Stewart, mother-in-law Nan, brothers-in-law Morris and
Sandy, his son-in-law Joe and numerous aunts and uncles. He was very devoted to his family and he
cherished every moment he got to spend with them.
A memorial service will be held on October 2 at the Killarney Legion Hall at 2:00 pm where friends and
family will gather to celebrate Leonard’s life and legacy. A private family internment will be held at a
later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Stars Air Ambulance, 155A
West Hangar Road, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3Z1 or to a charity of your choice.
Leonard will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he
touched. We cherish the time that we were able to share with him. He will be remembered for his
selflessness and commitment to helping others.
