SPRUNG, Maurice Earle passed away peacefully at the Boundary Trails Health Centre on January 3, 2025 at the age of 83.

Maurice was born June 13, 1941, at Mrs. Hannah’s Nursing Home in Manitou, Manitoba, the third child of Gordon and Ella (Scharf) Sprung. He was raised on the family farm in the Middleton District with his four siblings and attended Middleton and Manitou Schools.

Maurice is predeceased by his wife, Elaine (2009), infant son Stephen Maurice, parents Gordon and Ella, parents-in-law Joe and Rae (Switzer) Tickner, siblings Harold, Ruth Cook, Allan and Ross and sister-in-law Janie (Tickner) Anderson.

He is survived by his children Laurie (Michael Crowe), Leanne (Jonathan Sloane), Philip (Catarina Camara), Kyle (Jennifer), grandchildren Jenna, Tyler (Quin), Kaitlyn (Brady); Merrick; Julian, Marcus; Clayton (Lia), Kelby, Colter, Keaston, special friend Sheryle Lyne, in-laws Crystal Conrod Sprung, Dwight Cook, Linda Sprung, Spence Anderson, Daryl and Jacquie Tickner and many nieces and nephews.

Maurice was a man of faith who believed in a gracious and forgiving God and lived out his faith through his generosity and kindness. Whether he was volunteering on committees or in the woodworking shop at Eden, visiting at the rink, or at family gatherings, hard work and love for others shone through in all he did.

Maurice married Elaine Tickner on September 5, 1964, and together they raised four children - Laurie, Leanne, Philip and Kyle. Farming, 4-H beef and home ec clubs, skating lessons, hockey, swimming, church, choir, Pony Club, trail rides, Ag Society, CB Radio club, Hereford Association and other community activities made for a full schedule. Having grown up attending fairs and exhibitions, the Manitou and Carman fairs, as well as the Morris Stampede were annual events for many years. A few nights at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in Brandon continued as a family tradition until only a few years ago.

Maurice grew up with a deep love for farming and hard work, qualities that shaped his life and work. From the age of 12, he farmed most of his whole working life on the family farm with mixed livestock and grain. His working career ended with 16 years of employment as a seasonal equipment operator at the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Morden. However, his interest and pride in the farm remained strong until the day he died through the farm family group text. Maurice showed interest and provided amazing support for the work, careers and activities of all four children, their spouses and grandchildren.

Maurice loved so many things – the farm and all its seasons, extended family connections and the community. He loved humour and to laugh – his smile was infectious and unforgettable, and he loved people – he loved his family, coffee with his friends at the bake shop and he loved and missed his parents. He loved to attend his grandchildren’s events and activities – hockey, soccer, baseball rugby, karate, Christmas concerts, music recitals and festivals, 4-H achievements, graduations – across Manitoba and beyond – making new friends wherever he went. For the last 13 years, Maurice enjoyed a friendship and time with Sheryle. Together they enjoyed working on projects, time with family, community events and some travel.
