It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Merla
Marjorie Aleen Hainsworth (née Morrison) on October 14, 2024, at her
residence in Evergreen Place, Boissevain, Manitoba, with her closest
family at her bedside. Merla will be remembered by her daughter
Sharon and Spud, grandchildren Dillon (Stefanie), Cody (Taylor),
Ashton, Maddy (Carter). Travis (Lisa),Trevor, Nickolas, Courtney, Roy (Leanne)
Great Grandchildren Addison, Asher, Kole, Wyatt, Emmett, Taylor, Jahseena
and Jahlryrika. Son Bob (Shirley) daughter Lorie (Kim).
Merla was the firstborn child of Wilbert Morrison and Alean Temple,
born on October 15, 1937, in Deloraine Hospital. She was
predeceased by her parents and her brother, Terry Keith Morrison.
Merla was raised on the family farm in Goodlands, Manitoba. She
attended a country school in Addington before finishing her education
in Goodlands. Merla enjoyed playing hockey with the Goodlands girls'
hockey team.
After school, she worked at Hasselfield’s Drug Store for three years.
She married Teddy Dewar and lived in Virden and Winnipeg, where
two children were born: Robert James and Lorie Elaine. Merla later
worked at the hospital in Deloraine and at Robinson’s Drug Store.
In 1969, she married Roy Hainsworth, and they resided on their farm
south of Deloraine. From this union, they had one daughter, Sharon
Roylene, born in 1971. During their time together in Deloraine, Merla’s
home was a gathering hub of the community. She loved to entertain
and put on a big spread for friends and family, especially enjoying
hosting hunting gatherings. Merla could cook the “wild” out of any
piece of venison. Merla and Roy ran a butcher shop on their farm and
were well-known for their blood sausage. They also raised various
animals and looked forward to having school tours to see their farm.
They raised specialty birds and showed them at The Royal Manitoba
Winter Fair. They were avid Royals fans and attended as many games
as possible; the referees always knew when Merla was in the building.
During their marriage, Merla and Roy looked forward to their annual
fishing trip to Cranberry Portage, where they made many lifelong
friends. In 1982, they welcomed their first twin grandchildren, Travis
and Trevor, whom Merla and Roy took pleasure in raising on the farm.
In 1996, they retired to Deloraine and relocated their hobby farm to
town. Merla and Roy’s coffee pot was always on, entertaining anyone
who knocked on the door. Merla loved taking trips to Belcourt, meeting
new people, and playing the machines.
Roy’s health began to fail, and he went into a care facility before
passing in 2011. Merla eventually sold their home in Deloraine and
moved into Centennial Apartments, where she embraced a social life
and enjoyed the comfort of being around others regularly.
In 2021, Merla relocated to Westview Lodge to be closer to Sharon
and her family and to receive the increased care she required. This
past January, she moved into Evergreen Place, where she enjoyed
her time until her final days.
Merla was known for her quick wit and brash sense of humor. She
took pride in watching her family grow over the years and celebrated
their accomplishments. She appreciated the attentive care provided by
Dr. Nell and his staff, feeling that she was always in good hands.
Donations in memory of Merla may be made to the Evergreen Place
activities department, as a thank you for their excellent care during her
last year.
A private graveside service will take place at Goodland Cemetery.
