Micheal Edward Geddes was born in Pilot Mound on March 26th, 1954.
Mike, as he was called by family and friends was the fourth of five children of Clare and Dorothy Geddes; Pamela, Eric, Earl, Micheal and Maurice who mourn his passing. Except for a few short stints away Mike lived on the family farm west of Pilot Mound all of his life until his declining health which required a move to the Rock Lake Personal Care Home where he spent the past seven years.
Early memories of Mike’s family and friends tell of his joyful nature always laughing and ready to tell a story. Mike loved the family gatherings with the Hughson,, Cavers and Davison clans at Barber’s Lake or other such venues, as well as his friends in Sunday School.
Mike attended Goudney School which was near the home farm until consolidation and then attended Pilot Mound Collegiate Institute for the remainder of his education.
All throughout his later years in school Mike had an active social life and enjoyed dances and parties always certain he partied with the best of his friends. Mike easily established many great friendships with the young people he grew up with. There was romance at different times in his life but Mike never married. This was a lifelong sore spot for Mike as he loved all of his nieces and nephews (Sheene, Ryan, Tiffany, Tiera, Tiana, Sohmer, Matt, Barney and Charles) and wished he had a family and children of his own.
Without his own family Mike poured his love into the Charolais cattle at Char-O-Clare Stock Farm. Mike knew every animal by heart and their pedigree back four or five generations. Not only did he know his cattle well he also showed them at major exhibitions across Western Canada and competed successfully at the Douglas and Gunton Bull Test Stations. While the farm carried his Dad’s name it was Mike’s hard work, sweat and tears that created the demand from commercial cattlemen across Western Canada for herd sires from Char-O-Clare Stock farm. Mike was known and respected far and wide in the cattle industry for his knowledge, friendliness and willingness to celebrate from time to time. Selling bulls and the relationships he made were some of the best times of his life.
Mike became a favourite with the residents and staff in the Pilot Mound Care Home where many folks visiting their own family would stop and have a visit with him also. Staff loved how he assisted other residents around and his cheerful, helpful nature. Residents were very fond of Mike as he puzzled with them and was kind and good natured in his sometimes difficult situations. He especially looked forward to regular visits with Doug Currie who brought him bird seed to feed his birds out the window and Bob Platt who would take him for weekly outings.
The family would like to thank all of the staff at Rock Lake Personal Care Home for the excellent care they provided and truly appreciate all of the people who have provided support in cleaning up his farm yard, arranging medical rides and sharing their love and prayers with and for Mike. He will be greatly missed by many.
