Patrick Basil Spurrill passed away peacefully April 18, 2020 with his loving wife of 67 years and family by his side.
Basil was predeceased by his mother and dad, Frank Spurrill Sr., and Augusta Spurrill, one brother Frank Spurrill Jr. and one sister Loretta Langlois. He is survived by his loving wife Inez (Spring), 3 sons and 2 daughters. Eugene (Patti) and children Michael (Kim) and Mark (Lisa); Larry (Barb) and children Felicia (Brian) Kempthorne and Chelsea (Tim) Inkster; Theresa (Warren) Wright and children Kyle (Krista) and Kelly; Greg (Sally) and children Darren and Brent; Caroline (Chris) McConnell and children Patrick, Adin, Inez. Also brothers John and Edward (Delores) and sisters Josie Bazin, Alice (Henry) Polk, Doreen (Alan) Turnbull and 9 great grandchildren.
Basil was born and grew up on his family farm NE 6-5-17 south of Dunrea, where he attended school in Buttrum and Dunrea. On April 11, 1953 Basil married Inez and later on purchased SE 6-5-17 where they lived and raised their children. Basil served as the secretary for the local Manitoba Pool board for 25 years, as well as the Mayor of Dunrea, Trustee on the St. Felix board for many years, member of the Knights of Columbus, and a past member of the Turtle Mountain Flywheel Club. Basil was also one of the organizers of the Dunrea Antique and Collectable Flea market that was held in Dunrea annually.
Dad liked to hunt & fish. When possible the family would go fishing at the local fishing spots. An annual family trip limited to one day, was usually to Austin Fair & Rodeo, a family highlight during the early years where mom would pack a huge picnic lunch and supper.
In 1976 Basil & Inez moved to Dunrea, where Basil would drive out to the farm until his son Greg took over the farm operation. Basil enjoyed a long and happy retirement. Basil & Inez enjoyed many trips south with their close friends. With Alaska being Dad’s favourite trip.
They especially enjoyed when their grandchildren came over to visit. As dad loved to tell stories of the past, stories of his grandparents and how hard it was to farm when he was young. Dad at times would bring out one of his latest purchased treasure and they would have to guess what it was. In his spare time dad liked to garden, and having one the best garden, which he loved to share with family and friends.
Basil’s passion was auction sales, and rarely missed one. Basil was an avid coin, stamp and pocket watch collector and as well some rare pieces that he only knew what they were. Dad absolutely loved going to auctions, once home would bring in the treasures for mom to see and then they would go through the boxes, mom kept what she wanted and rest went into storage.
There are not words to express dad’s influence on our lives Our father was hardworking, strong, loving, gentle, spoke his mind at times, but he also loved a good joke. Missing you every day Dad!
A family service was held at Wheatland Chapel On April 24, 2020 with Fr. Phillip Malayil officiating and burial took place at St. Felix Cemetery in Dunrea, Manitoba. A public memorial mass and reception will be held at a later date.
