Peter was the third son of JC and Annie Neufeld. He was born at Purple Springs, AB into a family of 8; three boys and five girls. In 1949 the family moved from Alberta to Manitoba and settled in the Margaret area. It was here that he started cultivating his love of farming. He always said that when they moved from Alberta, they moved not only geographically, but back in time - from school bus era in Alberta, back to horse and buggy in Manitoba, where he received his education at Harmony school. Peter left school to help his dad on the family farm and that’s when his love of farming began.
Peter was a quiet but faithful man whose beliefs were important to him. He was baptized at Ninga church as a teenager. His faith shaped the way he farmed and raised his family.
In 1963 Peter married Kay Dick and they made their home 3 miles south of Margaret. Together they raised their 4 children here: three sons and a daughter.
Peter started his farming career with all manner of livestock, pigs, chickens, cows, and horses. He really loved farming but grew truly happy when he transitioned to crop only farming and didn’t have to do chores anymore. In later years, he spent many hours crop checking or as it was also called, “quality control.” Peter loved to go for drives and was not averse to long road trips. He took the family across Canada, camping in the squeaky pop-up camper - many times driving to Regina and camping on the outskirts of the city to attend the Canada farm show there. Dad also loved a good deal, and on several occasions, he made deals to trade wheat for implements or even a new car. This meant several trips to Steinbach, 300 bushels of grain at a time. After he retired from farming, he loved visiting the fields, especially during harvest, and riding in the cab of the combine was one of the great joys in his life, and he continued to do this as long as he was able.
Peter loved his family and although usually a quiet observer, was always a loyal supporter at all of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and musical recitals. He was selfless in his desire to please his family. When his kids were teenagers he bought a ski boat - even though he never learned to swim. He also enjoyed taking the whole family for weekend trips to Minot even though he was not a shopper. He took pleasure in seeing his family happy and having fun together. This often included going for ice cream which occurred many times in many towns. Peter also had a strong love of reading. He would read any and all manner of material, but he would always start at the end of the book and read a couple of pages to see if the book was worth his time to read!
Peter is predeceased by his parents, JC and Annie Neufeld, brother Jake, and Mary Neufeld. sisters: Venie, and Erv Hiebert, Marg, and Pete Romanuk, and Anne, and Bob Gill. Also by Brother in law, Henry Fehr and Sister in law, Gerry Neufeld.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kay. Sons: Greg & Tammy (children Bronwyn and Jackson), Andy & Lisa (children Erika and Graham), Sean and Dianna (children Sam, Maddy, and Elena), and daughter, Nicky, & Trevor Berg (children Ben, Hannah and Owen). Also, by Brother, Ernie Neufeld, and Sisters Zelma Fehr, and Vera, and Jim Jones.
The family would like to express thanks to Dr. Nell and to all the staff at Westview lodge, and Evergreen Place for their care.
