Russell A. Dagg
February 28, 1928 ~ August 10, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Russell Allen
Dagg at 96 years of age, on August 10, 2024, after a long, fulfilling life.
Russell was born on February 28, 1928, at the farm, which was 6 miles
outside of Killarney. He was the second child of Allen and Beatrice Dagg.
He was predeceased by his dad Allen in 1963, his older brother Wilmer in
2008 and his younger sister, Dorothy (Edwards) in 1994 and his Mom
Beatrice in 1994, who he lived with most of her 93 years. Left to cherish
his memory are his nieces Linda Warren, Sandy Briscoe (Barry), Paula
Lietz (Duane), Carla Brigden (Barry) and Diana Dagg (Hal). He also
developed very close relationships with the next generation of great nieces
and nephews, Martin, Amber, Erin, Jill, Amy, Marc, David, Avery, Andrew
and Allison. Some of the third generation also were teased and played with
by their Uncle Russell.
Russell never married but he was surrounded and adored by his 5 nieces.
For many summers, as soon as school was out and any holiday throughout
the year, the nieces would be at the farm. As they got older, they became
Russell’s “hired help”. This required endless patience, a sense of humour
and repair skills for what inevitably was broken or damaged. We all
remember these as very special times in our early years.
Russell loved the farm. After he completed grade six at Sanders School,
he worked on the family farm. In 1950, he bought his own land nearby.
He took over the family farm in 1964 and operated it as a mixed cattle and
grain farm, along with his mother, Beat. The farm was a welcoming place
over the years to many relatives and friends. No one left the farm without a
box full of produce from the huge garden. Russell loved Hereford cattle and
his border collies, Duke, Duffy and Shy Boy. In his 80’s, he and his lifelong
friend, Roy Clarke, would buy a small herd each year. They would spend
the spring and summer tending to them and then sell them in the fall.
Russell played hockey and baseball with other rural children (many were
first cousins from the neighbouring Keyes’ farm). He enjoyed hockey all his
life and for many years he attended all the Shamrock men’s senior hockey
home games. Russell played with the Sanders Fastball team, and he
continued to play liniment league baseball and then seniors’ slow pitch. In
2010 he flew, for the first time, to Toronto to see his team, the Blue Jays,
play 3 home games. Curling was his winter passion, and his quiet, calm

demeanor made him the ideal skip for many teams over the years. Russell
was an avid hunter and gardener; both activities he continued into his early
90’s. He took up golf in his later years as well as woodworking, bird
carving, leather work, reading, photography and jigsaw puzzles. Russell
always had a project on the go, and we were the lucky recipients of many
handmade Christmas gifts.
Although Russell was a very quiet man, he had many friends in the
community. For many years, he enjoyed joining the daily coffee gang in
town.
Thank you to Dale and Sharon Stephenson for your years of friendship,
companionship and support to Russell.
A special thank you to the many home care workers who attended to
Russell over the years. At 93, Russell moved from his house to Lakeview
Villa in Killarney where he enjoyed the companionship of others and a large
puzzle table where you could always find him. At the beginning of 2024,
Russell moved into Bayside Personal Care home where he celebrated his
96 th birthday. He was loved by the staff and other residents for his gentle
nature. The family truly appreciate the loving care he received from
everyone at Bayside.

A service will be held on Saturday, August 24that 1 p.m. at the Wheatland Chapel.

Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
