After living at Tabor Home in Morden, MB for the past year Walter passed away peacefully on Thursday evening at the age of 86. He was predeceased by his parents Ewald and Dorothy, as well as his brother-in-law Allan Schultz, his sister Lila White and brother-in-law Larry White. He is survived by his sister Bernice Schultz, his niece Diana Schultz and her family, as well as 4 nephews, Glenn and Lorne Schultz and Clayton and Dean White and their respective families.
Walter was born in Moosehorn, MB. He attended Valley View school near Snowflake, MB until grade 3, then went to Kaleida school until grade 5. After a family move he attended Darlingford school until grade 9. Around 1953 Walter started working as a farm labourer for a neighbour then later with his Uncle Reinhold Mutcher at Carman. Walter also worked for about a year on the pipeline with his Dad. In 1963, Walter started working for Tom Strange in Manitou with the backhoe. In 1967, Walter purchased his first backhoe from Tom and started his own excavation business, eventually retiring in 2000. During these years Walter lived on the farm with his Mom and they farmed most of the 38.4 acres and raised a few cattle and chickens.
Walter enjoyed driving his 1952 Willy’s Jeep, dancing, curling (getting an 8-ender) and snowmobiling until he suffered a snowmobile accident in 1968 where the machine’s throttle stuck open leaving him with a fractured left leg and in traction for several months. After the accident Yamaha installed a clip on their snowmobiles to prevent that from ever happening again.
Walter was part of the group that travelled to Manibridge, MB to get the curling rink that currently stands in Darlingford. Walter’s truck and trailer were used to move the building.
In 2011 Walter started peritoneal dialysis at home and continued until he switched to hemodialysis in 2016. Walter moved to the Kinsman Haven in Manitou in 2016 where he enjoyed going for tea and visiting with the other residents. He eventually sold the farm in 2022.
The family requests no flowers but donations may be made to the Dialysis Unit of Boundary Trails Health Centre, Diabetes Canada, or a charity of choice in Walter’s honour if friends so desire.
