William "Bill" McGuire Obituary

William Kenneth McGuire (Bill) passed away at his home December 18, 2023 in Trail, BC at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife Donna Price (Woodruff) and his daughter Susan (Gerry) Blixhavn as well as sisters-in-law Betty McGuire, Joan Raggett, Verna Woodruff, and Diane (Al) Buchignani and many well-loved nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife Arlie (Woods) (1999), daughter Janet LaForest (2020), son-in-law Paul LaForest (2010), brother Melville (Mick) (2023), sister-in-law Audrey (2005) and her husband Bob Wallace (2001), sister-in-law Sharon Babish (2010) and brothers-in-law Eugene (Geno) Woodruff (2020) and Gerry Raggett (2003).

He was born in Spencerville, ON to Ruby (Dunbar) and Ernest (Ernie) on December 14, 1930 and spent 43 years with the Abitibi Paper Company in Pine Falls, Manitoba. He worked his way up to Assistant Pulp Mill Superintendent before retiring in 1992. It was in Pine Falls that he met Arlie, where they married in 1956 and raised his two daughters, Janet Lynn and Susan Lea.

Bill believed in serving his community. Throughout the years he was an active member and volunteer in many organizations in Pine Falls including the Golf Club, Curling Club, Bowling League, Masonic Lodge, Trap Shoot Club and the Pine Falls Recreation Association. In addition, he refereed hockey and assisted Arlie with organizing many figure skating events in the community. As the son of a WW1 veteran who survived the Battle of Vimy Ridge, he became involved in the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) in the 1970’s. He served at the Pine Falls RCL Branch #64 through Executive, Zone, and Provincial Command where he served as District Six Commander for 2 terms. He was also active in the RCL Sports Foundation with many hours of volunteer work at the Legion Athletic Camp in the International Peace Garden. He received an honorary life membership for all of his dedication.

In 2003, Bill moved to Rossland, BC to be with his new love Donna Price and the two of them enjoyed traveling to many places. Donna’s family embraced and welcomed Bill with open arms and he became a much loved sports fan and cheerleader for his great-nieces and nephews. Bill continued his volunteer service in the Kootenays, becoming an active member of the local Lions Club International, Rossland Eagles Club as well as the Trail RCL #11. He became the membership chairman for the West Kootenay Zone and was Zone Commander for three terms. In June 2016, Bill was awarded the Palm Leaf by his good friend Rick Lundin in Grand Forks to go with the Meritorious Service Award. This is the highest honour for service the RCL bestows.
