The family of Willie August De Yaegher is sad to announce his passing on July 13, 2022 at the Valleyview Care Centre Long Term Care Home in Brandon.
Willie was born on September 9, 1927, to Victor Hector De Yaegher and Maria De Schyver who immigrated by boat from Belgium in 1924. They farmed at Fairfax and then moved to farm at Desford for a few years. On March 15, 1930, Willie’s brother Wilfred was born. In 1938, the family then moved to Minto to farm SE 1-6-20.
Willie attended Fairfax school until grade six when he left school to help out on the farm.  Willie met Gladys Nellie Leifso and the two were married on March 15, 1954 and celebrated 66 years together before her passing on August 27, 2020. Willie and Gladys farmed for ten years at Croll before taking over his parents’ farm at Minto.
Willie and Gladys’ daughter Lorraine Mavis was born on October 7, 1954. Larry Wayne was born on June 28, 1956. Laverne Antone was born on December 31, 1966. Together the family farmed a variety of grain crops. Over the years, they raised many animals and created wonderful memories of their milestones and challenges of farming. Harvest was an enjoyable time for Willie to combine and have Gladys run the grain truck. For numerous years, Wilfred would venture out from Calgary, Alberta to help out as well.
A few times, Willie traveled to Thielt, Belgium to visit his cousins. As well, Willie and Gladys would drive through Saskatchewan and Alberta to get out to see Laverne in British Columbia, stopping to see family along the way. They enjoyed numerous summers at their camper in Killarney.
In 2014, Willie and Gladys moved off the family farm to live in Crocus Estates in Boissevain where they would make some new friends and continue to play cards with old neighbours.
Their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all appreciated the hardwork and dedication Willie and Gladys demonstrated. Lots of determination and jobs to be done, and lots of time to celebrate, play cards, share food and drinks together were all as equally important.
Willie was a great man with a big personality and an even bigger heart. We will forever miss and love you Dad, Grandpa, & Great-Grandpa.
Thank you so much to the staff at Valleyview Care Home in Brandon, Westview Lodge in Boissevain and all of his close friends that called or visited often. He loved you all dearly.
A graveside service at Minto Cemetery will take place at 1:00 PM on Monday, August 29th, 2022. Lunch to follow at the Minto Hall.
Donations in memory of Willie may be made to Minto Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund Box 53 Minto, MB ROK 1M0
